Google Nexus 5 comes with Android 4.4 KitKat, a locked bootloader, un-rooted. USB Drivers are essential for connecting Nexus 5 with computers to transfer files back and forth, but also for flashing custom ROMs, kernels, files, unlocking bootloaders and others more.

Make sure to enable the USB Debugging for your Google Nexus 5 from the Developer Options first.

  • Open Settings, then About Phone.
  • Tap the Build Number seven times to unlock Developer Options.

Now you can continue to the tutorial.

How to install Google Nexus 5 USB / ADB / Fasboot / Bootloader drivers:

  1. Download the Nexus 5 Drivers from here.
  2. Extract the zip contents and place all files in a single folder on your desktop.
  3. Connect your device to your computer.
  4. Launch the Device Manager on your PC.
  5. Now you should see the Nexus 5 listed in the hardware list.
  6. Right-click the 'Nexus 5' line and then click on Update Driver Software.
  7. Next, click the 'browse my computer' option.
  8. In the new window click on 'Browse...' button.
  9. Go to folder unzipped at step 2. Select the folder where you extract the USB Drivers. Click Next.
    - make sure to tick the subfolder box too.
  10. Now, the Windows installer will search for Nexus 5 drivers, click Install when asked for permission.
  11. Wait for the process to complete and then check the Device Manager list to confirm that the installation was successful.

Also, you should launch the device in Bootloader Mode to check and see if the device is connected by your computer. If not, then you should stay in Bootloader Mode menu and then repeat the entire tutorial listed above. Eventually, the Google Nexus 5 will be recognized by your PC.

Google Nexus 5 Download Mode can be launched like this:

  • power off your phone.
  • press and hold Volume Down and Power buttons simultaneously
    - an Android robot will show up and the Fastboot Mode text is listed.
  • connect the Nexus 5 to your PC via USB Cable.
  • from this menu you can access Recovery and all the other

This doesn't work for me. :( It just shows h5321 gw under 'other devices' when I tell him to apply the downloaded drivers he tells me that he cant find drivers. I tried it with usb debugging, in mtp mode, in ptp mode and I also unchecked both and tried again in usb debugging. Do you have any suggestions?

Many people are facing problems due to MTP driver and WMF-Dist-11 Runtime library:
Follow these steps to successfully transfer files from Nexus 5 to PC vice-versa:

If anyone is trying to connect Nexus 5 to a formatted Windows XP then follow these steps:

Download and install media transfer protocol porting kit: MTP porting kit

Download and install WMFDistributable-11 for XP: WMFDist-11 XP

Download and install LG United Mobile Driver v3.10.1

Connect your device.

Nexus

Go to Device Management

Right click on Nexus 5 and click Update Driver

Select Yes this time only

Select Install Software Automatically

Wait for sometime.. and enjoy transferring files

Awesome! Works like a charm! It's March so the errors that others were having may have been fixed (potentially)!

People, follow the directions step by step and it'll work. Helped me a lot, thanks!

What he means when he says 'Look for Nexus 5' is in your device manager, right click, update drivers and then browse directory and pinpoint towards your SDK folder location, It'lll find the driver install and bam, done.

Still not working for me (Win 7, Nexus 5).. I tried the sdk version, the standalone driver provided by Google. When I'm setting it to Camera (only get pictures to transfer) it installs the driver but as soon as I switch back to MTP Win7 won't recognise it... Arg!

It wasn't working for me before, BUT after toggling 'USB computer connection' to Camera (PTP), it works with the downloaded file.

Settings -> Storage -> Options (...) -> USB computer connection -> Camera (PTP)

LOL. Can't believe that worked. You don't need to install the drivers, even. Windows 7 does it automagically when connecting the device. Great tip!

Thank you for this. For whatever reason my computer was putting up a huge fuss, but this helped me 'debug' my issue. I appreciate it.
