Dell Latitude E5520 laptop
Windows 10, 64 bit, Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709
After upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and after every major Windows 10 update, I have noticed that my internal microphone 'disappears' - it is not disabled, it is simply not there.

The solution (which I have had to do twice now), is to install the IDT Audio driver. This link to the Dell community forum has more detail, as this is something that seems to affect quite a few Dell laptops:

However, after the latest major update (1709), the microphone again disappeared, but this time, after installing the IDT driver, the laptop will not boot.
I need to boot into safe mode and uninstall the audio driver, then the laptop can boot again normally (though, of course, the internal microphone does not work).
Any suggestions for where to investigate further?
